People at SDJ

The original Darby and Joan Club, founded in 1942, and now the last remaining independently run older people’s day centre in the London Borough of Lambeth, Streatham Darby and Joan Club provides a wide range of activities and services for ever more diverse groups of older people, in conjunction with its partners, Lambeth Asian Centre, Make A Difference Black Afro-Caribbean Group, Age Concern Lambeth, and Lambeth Council.

Streatham Darby and Joan Club, based at Woodlawns, a Victorian villa set amid peaceful surroundings, aims to provide older people with support, companionship and a range of activities that promote their independence, improve their health and well-being, value their diversity, and make later life an enjoyable, fulfilling and more rewarding experience.

Woodlawns History

No16 the Woodlawns Centre (the Darby and Joan Club) was built as Barham House in 1868. It was built for the Drew family by the firm of George Trollope and sons and immediately became a family home for Joseph Harvey Trollope, one of George’s sons. Due to the efforts of David Robertson MP the house was acquired in 1943 for use by the Streatham Darby and Joan Club and has remained as an older persons centre ever since.
